About
Hellena Yang is a Canadian-Chinese classical pianist and educator who brings conservatory training and a working knowledge of the music world to every lesson she teaches.
She holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in Piano Performance from the Royal College of Music in London, where she studied under Professor Gordon Fergus-Thompson and Professor Mengyang Pan. Those years gave her the foundation she still teaches from: rigorous technique, a large amount of stage time, and constant collaborative playing.
She went on to complete a Master's degree in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy at Goldsmiths, University of London, studying music education, arts leadership, and cultural management. The two degrees pull in the same direction — one shaped how she plays, the other shaped how she thinks about music's place in a student's life.
Technical excellence and artistic expression are not two subjects. They are one, taught together from the first lesson.
Today she teaches the full Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum from her studio in Greater Vancouver, and performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative pianist.

Teaching
Lessons are built around the student in front of her — but the destination is always the same: playing that is healthy, expressive, and secure enough to hold up on an exam bench or a stage.
Hellena teaches the complete Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, preparing students for examinations, festivals, competitions, auditions, and public performance. Her emphasis is on healthy playing habits, thoughtful musicianship, and instruction shaped to the individual, so that confidence and musical sensitivity grow alongside the certificates.
Repertoire, technique, studies, and ear training across the full syllabus, with exam and festival preparation when a student wants it.
The written foundation — notation, scales, intervals, and chords — taught alongside playing rather than crammed before a deadline.
Voice leading, analysis, and keyboard harmony, through the levels required for the ARCT.
Periods, styles, and repertoire in context, so that the piece on the stand makes sense as more than notes.
Performance
Hellena performs solo, chamber, and collaborative programmes across Canada — because a teacher who still plays teaches differently.
